By Chris Littleworth

Covers: L&YR Western District Lines, Salford to Wigan (No.1) via Atherton, Salford to Euxton via Bolton and Branches.

This series is the definitive history of the signal boxes which controlled the running of trains on the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway and its successors up to the present day. This book is Part One of the volume covering the lines North and West of Manchester. Part Two is also available from the The L&YR Society.

The book starts with a chapter covering the development of signalling and a short history of the manufacturers and contractors used by the L&YR before it commenced making all its own signalling equipment at its Horwich Works. It then follows the story through the LMS period and into BR.

The main section of the book records the history of each box including a signalling diagram, distances, opening times and closure dates where applicable. The book is profusely illustrated with over 120 beautifully reproduced photographs.
