    The book starts with a detailed look at life in a signal box, the rules and regulations, pay rates and the operating procedures which kept the trains running safely.

    The main section of the book records the history of each box including a signalling diagram, distances, opening times and closure dates where applicable. The book is profusely illustrated with over 140 beautifully reproduced photographs.

    The book concludes with a history of signalling on the heritage East Lancashire Railway on which the author is a long standing member of the signalling team.
