LMS CENTRAL DIVISION MISCELLANY PART TWO 1931-1947

This is the final book in the Miscellany series. LYR Miscellany and LYR Miscellany 2 are out of print but LMS Central Division Miscellany Part One 1921-1930 and Central Division Miscellany - BR Days are available here. This volume covers the period of contraction during the recession and the recovery after 1935, when Stanier's locomotives transformed the performance of the railway, culminating in the great Coronation class Pacifics. 1939 saw Europe plunged in to war for a second time in the 20th century and the private railway companies responded magnificently to the challenge, but by 1945 the combination of intensive use and lack of maintenance meant the system was worn out. The final chapter for the LMS was the lead up to Nationalisation but it went out with a bang with the introduction of the first main line express diesel locomotives.
